DCAF-UNLIREC Outreach Event: Strengthening Oversight and Building Capacities for Small Arms Control in the Private Security Sector in Latin America and the Caribbean

DCAF, the German Permanent Representation to the Conference on Disarmament, and the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) co-hosted an outreach meeting to showcase the joint DCAF-UNLIREC project “Strengthening Oversight and Building Capacities for Small Arms Control in the Private Security Sector in Latin America and the Caribbean" to interested Permanent Missions in Geneva.

The innovative joint project seeks to promote good governance of the private security sector in Latin America and the Caribbean through the implementation of internationally-accepted standards, norms, and good practices for small arms control and private security legislation and regulation. It blends experiences from the security sector reform and the disarmament communities. During the meeting, DCAF and UNLIREC provided an overview of the challenges of regulation and small arms control in the private security sector in the region, and presented the main project outcomes achieved thus far as well as the joint plans to continue strengthening oversight and building capacity among the sector through the expansion of the project. The meeting also featured presentations by Costa Rica as a partner and beneficiary country of the project, as well as by Germany as the project funder.
